At Stage Left Lux we aim to attend at least one market or fair each month to show you our unique handcrafted and upcycled lighting creations. Between now and December we have four markets and events in the diary which we will be attending in and around Derby city centre. Shop locally and discover an amazing range of unique gift ideas. We hope to see you at some of these events! Saturday 26th October We will be at Assemble - this is Derbys celebration of all things to do with making and creativity. Assemble is hosted by Derby Museum of Making , the Silk Mill industrial museum. The home of the industrial revolution and the site of the world's first modern factory. Join us and a whole host of local creative talent for a fascinating day out! Saturday 16th November We attended this event last year and it was amazing! The Ethical Christmas market will be at Bustler near Derby Train Station. The Ethical Christmas Market promotes locally produced handcrafted items with a focus on sustainability. Here you will find crafts, homewares, fashing, jewellery, gift ideas and more produced by local craftspeople and artisans. Friday 22nd, Saturday 23rd & Sunday 24th November Visit Stage Left Lux on our home turf! Our workshop is based at Banks Mill Studios , every year the building is opened up for three days to allow you to visit and explore this magnificent building which is the base for over 30 creative businesses. We love nothing more than a day out at our local antiques centres, Derbyshire has lots of amazing antiques shops, junk shops and antiques centres - these are some of the places which we class as our ''wholesalers!'' Unwanted items transformed into quirky upcycled lighting Antiques centres are perfect for us to be able to pick up some great vintage items and some quirky objects to upcycle into lamps. A great way for us to turn unwanted items into wonderful upcycled lighting treasures. Last week we took a trip to Heanor Antiques Centre and found an amazing haul of goodies. Here's what we found... Our selection of vintage goodies from Heanor Antiques Centre in Derbyshire Some carved wooden bowls - we have some ideas up our sleeves for these, keep checking back to see what we will do with them! An old cast iron clothes iron - these make amazing table lamps. (we currently have some available in our online lighting shop ) A beautiful red vintage telephone An antique brass blowtorch And our absolutely favourite is this beautiful industrial harbour lantern light fitting. We've already started to transform our haul of vintage goodies into lamps, here's what we've done so far. Red vintage telephone upcycled lamp Of course the old retro rotary telephone has been converted into a very delightful table lamp, complete with a globe shaped vintage light bulb. This upcycled telephone lamp is now available to purchase in our online shop. Upcycled brass blow torch lamp We have lovingly converted the brass blow torch that we found into a beautiful table lamp. This lamp is perfect for use in any room and would be a thoughtful gift for an engineer. See our upcycled blow torch lamp in our lighting shop. Industrial steampunk inspired floor-standing lamp This is our favourite lamp made from the items we found whilst out bargain hunting. This twisted blend of heavy industry combined with steampunk flare. We took this old industrial harbour lantern and created an adjustable base out of copper pipe. The base is adjustable allowing you to alter the height of the lamp, perfect for use as general ambient room lighting or as a reading light. See our industrial standing lamp in our online shop. Stage Left Lux, Giving the gift of Light As part of our on-going campaign to gift lamps to local businesses we made this gorgeous Gothic themed Table lamp for Jack In A Box shop in Ripley Derbyshire. Jack In A Box are a gift shop based on the main High Street in Ripley Derbyshire. The shop is situated in a beautiful old building which used to be Barclays Bank, they sell a fantastic range of gifts, games and fantasy themed goodies such as anime and steam punk and gothic gift wares! They also stock a variety of boardgames and host games nights in their gothic themed games room which is inside the old bank vault! The brief Ben who owns the shop contacted us and asked if we could make a lamp in a gothic theme which would fit in well with their games room. Here's what we created We handcrafted a gothic arch shaped lamp base from solid rustic pine and added a bulb holder mounted on a wooden plinth. We then used a real candle which we hollowed out and melted with a blow torch to create a realistic melted candle effect, wired using vintage style braided cable and to top it all off we added a flickering lightbulb to add extra drama to the gothic style! Our lighting repair service will sympathetically restore your old, broken or damaged vintage lighting and lamps. We can fix most types of broken lamps and light fittings. Including vintage or antique table lamps, wall lights, standard lamps, chandeliers and pendant lights. We're based in Derby you can bring your lamps to us for us to repair or you can post them to us and we'll post them back when they're fixed. What we will do: Replace damaged bulb holders (lamp holders) with modern equivalents that are in-keeping with the original parts.  Rewire using an appropriate type and colour of cable.  Fit new light switches.  Fit a new UK mains plug with 3 amp fuse.  PAT test to ensure electrical safety. We've worked with lots of people over the years to carry out repairs and rewires for vintage lamps and light fittings. We are currently working with local Derby based antiques shop Antiques in the Quarter to provide a restoration and rewire service for antique and vintage lamps to make sure they are up to modern electrical standards and safe for the shop to sell Here are 4 good reasons why you should get your vintage lights restored: To comply with current building and rewiring regulations. Ensure they are safe to use. Good for the planet and reduces waste by bringing old items back into use. Old vintage lamps are very cool and give a unique twist to your home interior. We have repaired this old vintage cut glass crystal table lamp for Antiques in the Quarter. Fix and restore broken antique lamps. This lamp did not comply with current wiring regs and would be deemed unsafe to use. We would have failed the PAT test on this lamp following just a visual inspection. With the help of Stage Left Lux - we have been able to fully rewire and restore this lamp to bring it back to its former gloriousness! This light probably dated back to the 50s and looked like it had its original cable and bulb holder. To the untrained eye the cable may have looked fine, but I tell you it definitely wasn't! What were the main problems with this old lamp and how did we fix them? Wired using only two core cable, meaning the bulb holder was NOT earthed! This lamp has a metal bulb holder, UK wiring regs state that this must be earthed to protect the user if a fault develops that could lead to the bulb holder becoming live and posing a dangerous electric shock hazard. There was no protection to prevent damage to the cable by the entry to the threaded tube (could have sharp edges that can damage the cable) The inside of the bulb holder appeared to be burned. The cable was quite old and worn. The plug was not up to current standards and was broken. There was no cord-grip to protect the cable from being pulled out of the bulbholder. What have we done to fix this vintage lights issues and make it safe? New brass bulb holder has been fitted which confirms to BSEN61184 - The British Standard Institute* standard for UK electrical bulb holders. Cord grip has been fitted to prevent the cable being pulled out of the bulb holder. Added grommets to the threaded tube to protect the cable against damage. Wired using modern 3 core electrical cable. New in-line switch has been added. New electrical plug which conforms to BS1463 - The British Standard Institute* standard for UK electrical plugs. PAT tested and safety checked and made it ready to be sold to its new owner. The changes and upgrades we have made to this old vintage light are in-keeping with its original look and feel and style of the lamp, but at the same time ensuring it is safe for use and will provide many more years of light. *The British Standards Institute are an independent body who test the quality the quality of items that are available to buy in the UK. Items tested by the British Standards Institute are given a kite mark and a BS number which shows that they meet certain high standards of quality and they are safe for use. Here's a beautiful vintage chandelier that we have been restoring and rewiring. The owner of this chandelier found it at an antiques fair and fell in love with it, they wanted to use it but the wiring was old and unsafe. We have carefully dismantled and cleaned the chandelier, rewired using modern chandelier electrical cable, added new bulb holders and restored sympathetically to retain the unique charm and character of the original light fitting but at the same time making sure that it is up to modern electrical standards and safe to use. This chandelier will now continue to provide many years of lighting and enjoyment for its owner.
