Foreign lights not only have a different plug, but the bulb holders, switches and cables may not meet UK wiring regulations and safety standards. 

 

Due to lower voltages in many countries lamps are often wired using only thin two-core cable meaning the cable may not be able to withstand our higher voltage, but they are also not earthed, and could pose a risk of electric shocks or fire if not properly rewired. 

 

UK wiring regulations require that metal bulb holders are earthed.  Metal parts could become a hazard if a fault with the wiring occurs, which could pose a risk of electric shocks. 

 

The earth connection will break the fuse and disconnect the power supply if a fault in the wiring causes the metal parts to become live, making the lamp safe.
