  • Antique wall light restoration by Stage Left Lux lighting shop

We can help to restore and rewire most types of vintage and antique light fixtures, including wall lights, floor & table lamps and chandeliers. Antique wall light restoration Find out how we brought this pair of antique candle sconces back to life by converting them into electric lights. Antique wall light repair and rewiring We were recently contacted by a customer who owns a pair of old antique wall lamps. These were originally a pair of candle sconces which had historically been converted into electric lights, but the bulb holders and wiring were missing, so were in need of a complete overhaul to get them back into a usable state. 01 Initial contact The customer discovered Stage Left Lux via a Google search. She explained to us that she owns this pair of wall candle sconces and wanted to get them rewired and repaired to be able to use them. We asked the customer to email us some photos so we could assess what needed to be done. 03 Assessment and sourcing of parts for repairs. When the candle sconces were received, we were able to carry out further assessments to identify any missing parts, and source spare parts from various lighting suppliers that we use. 02 Send them to us The customer sent the pair of candle holders to us at our Derby Workshop in the post. 04 Advanced Tech We identified that because these were previously candle holders it meant there was limited space to accommodate wiring and electrical connections safely. Therefore, we needed to design and construct wooden bases to enable the candle scones to mount on the wall and house the electrical terminals. 05 We sourced some suitable timber to create the wooden bases, and routed the edges to create an elegant, bevelled edge which was in-keeping with the style of the candle sconces and finished using a Jacobean dark oak stain leaving a beautiful, grained finish. 06 The candle sconces were attached to the bases using lovely brass screws. 07 Due to the candle sconces having solid arms, this meant that the wiring had to run on the outside of the arms. For the wiring we used transparent cable which is almost invisible, we attached this to the arms using brass wire to neatly tuck the cabling at the back of the arms and out of view. 08 We added two chandelier candle holder bulb holders to each of the candle sconces, with antique style candle tubes to cover the bondholders, and create a visually appealing appearance. 09 The finished wall lights were fully tested for electrical safety and to ensure they were operating correctly. 10 The wall lamps were carefully wrapped and packaged and returned back to the customer for them to be installed and enjoyed in their home. • Restored Vintage Theatre Lighting by Stage Left Lux lighting shop

We restore and rewire all kinds of old lamps to modern standards but at the same time retaining their charactoristic charm. Restored theatre lighting, transformed into stylish vintage feature lamps for your home I've always had a huge passion for the theatre, and especially scenic design and lighting effects. Over the last 10-20 years there has been a huge shift from using traditional incandescent lamps (bulbs) to the use of LED (Light emitting diode). You may recognise the LED as being the red standby light on your TV. Recently there has been major advances in LED technology, LED's are smaller than traditional incandescent lamps, they are more energy efficient and don't get as hot - this means that casings for theatrical lights and spotlights can be made smaller and lighter and are becoming more affordable. Also colour changing and colour mixing technologies with LED lights means that traditional methods to produce coloured lighting effects such as coloured filter gels and colour wheels are now redundant. Modern theatre lights with moving lantern heads mounted on motorised bases means that large traditional follow spots which were moved by hand by a lighting operator are also no longer required. Theatres up and down the country are now upgrading their lighting systems which means lots of beautiful old theatre lights are being disposed of many of them are sadly simply thrown in a skip or weighed in as scrap metal. We can upcycle and transform old theatre lights to turn them into a vintage lighting feature for your home At Stage Left Lux we've made it our mission to save and preserve some of our wonderful theatrical history, by saving old theatre lights preserving them, rewiring them and turning them into beautiful feature lights for your home. Theatre lights come in many different shapes, sizes and styles depending on their intended use and make an attractive vintage lamp. From large flood lights which were to wash the stage with coloured light to aerodynamic spotlights fitted with various types of lenses from plain convex lenses which were to produce a narrow beam of concentrated light perfect for lighting individual performers or even shining a beam of light onto a mirror ball. To beautiful Fresnel lenses which produce a soft edged circle of light. At Stage Left Lux we like to keep the integrity of the theatre lights that we restore, we will rewire using authentic vintage style braided cable, we will also keep the original paint work and colours. There were two major players in the British theatre lighting industry; Strand Lighting Company founded in 1914 in London and FWJ Furse Lighting Company based on Nottingham, now owned by CCT lighting Both of these companies had a huge range of iconic designs and like all good rivals challenged each other to do big and better things, and producing their own versions - such as the spotlight model Strand Patt 23 and Furse's version the Furse model SPR profile spotlight. We told you they looked similar!! The designer of the Strand Patt23 - was Morgan McLeod he originally designed aeroplanes hence the beautiful aerodynamic curved body of the theatre lantern. Strand Patt23 Furse model SPR If you've got an old vintage theatre light that you would like to restore or rewire, get in touch with us. As many theatres are starting to upgrade their old lighting systems. Some of these sadly are simply thrown into a skip, but others are salvaged and saved. You can often pick up old theatre lights in junk shops and antiques centres and they are normally very affordable if they are in their original condition. In their original condition the wiring on theatre lamps may be old and unsave and they are often fitted with very powerful bulbs which are not suitable for use in a domestic setting. Restored theatre lights can either be mounted on a tripod as a floor-standing lamp perfect as an ambient reading light, wall mounted on a bracket or even ceiling mounted which is great for illuminating artwork. Stage Left Lux can sympathetically repair, rewire and restore old theatre lights, by replacing bulb holders with modern equivalents and rewiring to make them safe for use in the home. Here's an old Furse SPR Theatre light that we transformed from a rusty barn find into a beautiful tripod lamp. • Bespoke Steampunk style lamps by Stage Left Lux lighting shop

We created this beautiful steampunk table lamp custom-made to order based on a customers breif Bespoke steampunk style table lamp Generating ideas and making unique feature lighting. Bespoke made to order steampunk style table lamp Stage Left Lux received an email from a customer asking if we could make a steampunk lamp as a gift for a friend. The brief was that it should be copper and brass and include a vintage style Edison bulb. I asked the customer if they had any ideas in mind, and for them to send me photos of the styles they like in order to create a mood-board. I drew some sketches and designs which were emailed to the customer, after a few emails we had agreed the final design for the lamp. After just a couple of days the lamp was built by-hand, using copper pipe and brass fixings together with a vintage style light fitting and a large Edison vintage style bulb. The lamp was posted to the customer by special delivery ensuring that it got to them in plenty of time for them to give it to their friend as a gift. • Jonnie Walker Bottle bespoke lamp | Stage Left Lux

A unique lamp made from an upcycled Johnnie Walker Whiskey Bottle - the Brief was to cause no damage to this bottle, read more about what we did to convert this empty bottle into a stunning desk light! We can design and build bespoke ceiling lights, wall lighting, and table lamps to suit your style. Johnnie Walker Whiskey bespoke upcycled bottle lamp If you’re looking for something to do with your old household objects speak to Stage Left Lux to see how we can help. We can transform most household objects into incredible lights for your home, we can upcycle your old unwanted items into bespoke feature lamps, giving them a new useful purpose. The brief for this bespoke feature light We were asked if we could do something special with this Johnnie Walker Whiskey bottle, to turn it into a unique feature light for our customer, Richard to use on his desk. The bottle had sentimental value attached to it, so the main focus was to keep the bottle in original condition and cause no damage to it whilst converting it into a lamp. Richard wanted to have the bulb concealed inside the bottle if possible. How did we do it? The brief was to cause no damage to the bottle whilst upcycling it into a lamp. The customer, wanted to the bulb to be inside the bottle, allowing light to shine through the beautiful turquoise blues coloured glass. We have put bulbs inside bottles before either by suspending the bottle from a copper pipe frame or by drilling a hole in the base of the bottle. However we were unable to suspend the bottle as it was a cork rather than a screw-top meaning overtime the bottle would slip off the cork, and we were unable to drill the bottle as we had been instructed to cause no damage to the bottle whilst making this lamp. We needed to fit the bulb holder to the cork enabling the bulb to be inside the neck of the bottle and somehow safely run the cable from the power supply to the top of the bottle whilst keeping things neat and tidy with no ugly cables being viable. To over-come this, we created a wooden base and top supported by copper columns. This allowed the power supply to entre the wooden base and the power supply to travel up through the copper columns and be safely concealed out of sight. We used thin braided cable which neatly jumps out of the wooden top and re-enters through the cork to the bulb holder. The wooden base and top were given a blue washed finish to show off the grain of the timber and compliment the colour of the glass bottle. • Top hat feature lamp handmade by Stage Left Lux

Find out more about our unique feature lamp made from a beautiful antique top hat lovingly converted into a bespoke feature lamp. We can design and build bespoke ceiling lights, wall lighting, and table lamps to suit your style. Top hat upcycled vintage style lamp If you’re looking for something to do with your old household objects speak to Stage Left Lux to see how we can help. We can transform most household objects into incredible lights for your home, we can upcycle your old unwanted items into bespoke feature lamps, giving them a new useful purpose. We recently found an old top hat in Antiques in the Quarter local antiques shop on Queen Street Derby, shortly afterwards we were lucky enough to find an old mannequin clothing display bust. Something unique and special We really wanted to do something really special with this old top hat, it has so much history and beautiful wear. We decided that we wanted to use the top hat as a lampshade and the mannequin as a base. Our signature no-damage techniques to upcycling Using our signature, no damage techniques we were able to mount the top hat above the mannequin bust creating an eye-catching floating effect which retaining the full integrity of the top hat. We initially tried painting the bust – our original aim was to paint it black and white to replicate a tuxedo effect, however we didn’t like the paint finish. To correct this was covered the bust in tissue paper machete, the plan was to use the tissue paper as a nice base to paint on. However, when the tissue paper and glue had dried, we discovered it had created a beautiful marble effect which we loved. So instead of repainting the bust we decided to give it a coat of lacquer, this made the mannequin bust look like it was carved out of marble stone! We created a metal frame out of copper pipe and a round base for the top hat to sit on, with the bulb holder mounted underneath. We obtained a large lantern shaped bulb which just happens to be in the shape of a human head. We added a bowtie to give this lamp an extra quirky vintage ‘’gentleman Jack’’ feel. The finished result was an incredible, large-scale feature light worthy of being on display in an art gallery!
