How we turned an old coffee machine boiler into a bespoke steampunk lamp. Steampunk style boiler lamp A few weeks ago whilst I was exploring the Heights of Abraham in Matlock, Derbyshire, I received a Whatsapp message from a new customer, there was a photo of a large copper boiler and a request ''could you turn this boiler into an industrial looking lamp?'' My reply was - Absolutely I would love to do that! The message was from Sue, she is a pub landlord, the boiler was taken from the inside of an old broken down coffee machine. I love working with copper, and I am completely passionately-mad about industrial heritage, the age of steam and steampunk design. How did we make this boiler into a quirky lamp? After discussing some initial ideas with sue, how to configure the boiler, should it stand upright or lay on its side? The boiler was just a plain copper cylinder, but it had so much character and charm. There are two large pipe connections on one side which could act as feet for it to stand on, so the decision was made to have it horizontal. I used reclaimed scaffolding board as the base and away I went creating this amazing Steampunk lamp. This was an amazing and fun lighting project to work on, Sue was happy to give me free-reign, I was just like an excited kid at Christmas, I found loads of cool bendy copper pipe, dials and pressure gauges. I was able to add lots of quirky decorative features, brass fittings, stopcocks and valves to create a quirky eye-catching chaotic lamp, which looks like something straight out of Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory! I was recently approached by a fellow trader whilst at a market in Burton-on-Trent. Julie, asked if I could create a ceiling light for her based on an idea she had for a spider-like design pendant light, using upcycled glass jars as lightshades. We discussed ideas and plans and I was able to draw some sketches with some ideas, it was exactly what Julie had in-mind. The parts such as the ceiling rose, cabling and fixing accessories for the light were ordered and I even installed the light in Julie’s living room at her home in Sutton-in-Ashfield. Saving Julie the hassle of finding an electrician to do it! Julie was thrilled with the service and she’s in love with her new light fitting. Upcycled Camera wall lights designed and handmade by Stage Left Lux .bespoke feature lighting handmade in Derbyshire using upcycled and repurposed materials. Upcycled vintage camera wall lights We were asked to turn some old vintage Kodak cameras in to a pair of unique wall lights. Vintage Kodak camera wall lights Stage Left Lux were recently commissioned by a customer to create a pair of wall lights out of a pair of old Kodak Brownie Cameras. The cameras belonged to the customers dad so were of sentimental value, so it was key to be able to create a special pair of lights that would be sympathetic to the cameras and provide lasting memories whilst serving the purpose of providing a useful light source. The brief: Create a pair of lamps out of two vintage cameras. The lights were to be a pair as they will be used as bedside lamps The lamps needed to be wall mountable To be wired using ‘Kodak yellow’’ vintage style power cable Early on in the design stage we thought it would be a brilliant idea if the lights were somehow mounted on tripods, this would allow the lamps to be adjustable in order for them to be used as reading lights. We obtained a pair of miniature camera tripods and mounted these on small wooden shelves to create a wall mountable base. The light fitting was to be fitted into the camera flash, which provided a reflector to create a spotlight type effect. This posed some challenges as the camera flashes were a small size, we decided to use G4 LED bulbs which provide a bright light source but are small in size. G4 LEDs run on a 12 volt power supply – this meant we needed to incorporate a low voltage transformer somewhere. To do this we added a junction box to contain the transformer this was also used to house the switch gear to turn the lamps on and off. The junction box could then be then tucked away neatly under the shelf to conceal it. The end result was a pair of unique wall lights which were beautiful in design, stylish and practical. A unique lamp made from an upcycled Johnnie Walker Whiskey Bottle - the Brief was to cause no damage to this bottle, read more about what we did to convert this empty bottle into a stunning desk light! We can design and build bespoke ceiling lights, wall lighting, and table lamps to suit your style. Johnnie Walker Whiskey bespoke upcycled bottle lamp If you’re looking for something to do with your old household objects speak to Stage Left Lux to see how we can help. We can transform most household objects into incredible lights for your home, we can upcycle your old unwanted items into bespoke feature lamps, giving them a new useful purpose. The brief for this bespoke feature light We were asked if we could do something special with this Johnnie Walker Whiskey bottle, to turn it into a unique feature light for our customer, Richard to use on his desk. The bottle had sentimental value attached to it, so the main focus was to keep the bottle in original condition and cause no damage to it whilst converting it into a lamp. Richard wanted to have the bulb concealed inside the bottle if possible. How did we do it? The brief was to cause no damage to the bottle whilst upcycling it into a lamp. The customer, wanted to the bulb to be inside the bottle, allowing light to shine through the beautiful turquoise blues coloured glass. We have put bulbs inside bottles before either by suspending the bottle from a copper pipe frame or by drilling a hole in the base of the bottle. However we were unable to suspend the bottle as it was a cork rather than a screw-top meaning overtime the bottle would slip off the cork, and we were unable to drill the bottle as we had been instructed to cause no damage to the bottle whilst making this lamp. We needed to fit the bulb holder to the cork enabling the bulb to be inside the neck of the bottle and somehow safely run the cable from the power supply to the top of the bottle whilst keeping things neat and tidy with no ugly cables being viable. To over-come this, we created a wooden base and top supported by copper columns. This allowed the power supply to entre the wooden base and the power supply to travel up through the copper columns and be safely concealed out of sight. We used thin braided cable which neatly jumps out of the wooden top and re-enters through the cork to the bulb holder. The wooden base and top were given a blue washed finish to show off the grain of the timber and compliment the colour of the glass bottle. The overall result was this beautiful industrial steampunk effect table lamp which our customer is over the moon with and has placed pride of place in his home office!
